I used to think leadership meant having all the answers.
Early in my career, I watched leaders who seemed unshakeable, polished in every meeting, decisive in every moment. I tried to mirror that image, believing that vulnerability was weakness and uncertainty was failure.
Then I met a leader who changed everything.
During a particularly challenging quarter, instead of spinning our struggles into corporate speak, he stood before our team and said simply: "I don't have this figured out yet. But I know we'll solve it together." He shared his own doubts, admitted where he'd made mistakes, and asked for our help.
Something changed in that room. We all felt it. The tension we'd all been carrying, the pretense, the performance, just dissolved. We stopped trying to look perfect and started focusing on the actual work.
That's when I learned what trustworthy leadership really means.
It's not about being flawless. It's about being real. It's the alignment between who you are, what you believe, and how you show up. Especially when it's hard.
Trustworthy leaders don't hide behind titles or talking points. They let their values guide decisions even unpopular ones, own their mistakes before anyone else has to point them out, and create space where people can bring their full selves to work.
When people sense trust in a leader, something remarkable happens. They stop wasting energy on workplace theater. Instead of managing up or covering their tracks, they pour that energy into innovation, ownership, and genuine collaboration.
Trust isn't built through perfection. It's built through consistency. When your team knows you'll show up as the same person whether you're celebrating wins or navigating failures, they begin to believe not just in you, but in themselves and the work you're doing together.
